Saint Sebastian was born in Narbonne, France, in 256 AD, but lived most of his life in Italy. It is believed that he enlisted in the Roman army with the mission of helping Christians who were being persecuted and mistreated by the Romans. When Emperor Diocletian discovered that St. Sebastian was a Christian, he was ordered to be attached to a pole and killed with arrows. St. Sebastian was still found alive by Irene, a devout Christian, who took care of his wounds. Saint Sebastian again confronted Diocletian for the barbaric deaths of Christians, but this time he did not escape with his life. Every year, on January 20, a tribute is paid to St. Sebastian.
