Cajetan was born in 1480, in Vicenza, Italy. When he was twenty-four years old, he graduated in Law, in Padua, and shortly after went to Rome, where he worked with Pope Julius II helping him to reconcile the Venetian Republic. In 1516 he became a priest, and four years later went to Venice where he founded a hospital for the incurable. In 1523 Cajetan returned to Rome and, together with his companions at the Oratory of Divine Love, founded the Order of Regular Clerics of Divine Providence, known as the “Theatines”. It was the first religious order aimed at Catholic reform. Asking for nothing and owning nothing was their motto. Cajetan was beatified by Pope Urban VIII in 1629, and canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671. His feast day is August 7th.
