St. Lawrence was born in 225, in Huesca, Spain. He was appointed by Pope Sixtus II to be an archdeacon in Rome. He was the one who managed the property of the church, which in turn helped meet the needs of the poor. In the year 258, the emperor Valerian decreed that all bishops, priests and deacons should be put to death. Before he had St. Lawrence killed, the emperor asked him where the treasures of the Church were, and he showed him the poor, sick and marginalized. St. Lawrence was burned alive on a grill. His love for Jesus was stronger than the fire that consumed him from the outside. St. Lawrence is often depicted with a grill in one hand and a Bible in the other hand. His feast day is August 10th.
