Saint Dominic was born in 1170 to a wealthy family in Spain. Before he was born, his mother had a dream. She dreamed of a dog running around the world with a burning torch in its mouth. This dog would come to represent Saint Dominic’s great desire to help people come closer to Jesus. Saint Dominic became a priest and went to the south of France. While there, he met many people who were abandoning their faith. Saint Dominic decided to spend the rest of his life preaching and leading people back to Jesus. He started a new religious order to help preach and teach the faith. This order was called the Order of Preachers, or Dominicans. Many men and women joined the Order and became priests and nuns, helping Saint Dominic bring people all over Europe back to the faith. It is said that Mary appeared to Saint Dominic and gave him a rosary. When Saint Dominic died in 1221, the Dominicans were already spread throughout Europe, continuing their desire to preach and teach the faith and love of Jesus. Saint Dominic is the patron saint of astronomers and his feast day is August 8.
