St. John Bosco’s Day is celebrated on January 31st. St. John Bosco, or Don Bosco, was an Italian priest, founder of the Salesians and co-founder of the Salesian Sisters. He also created the Association of Devotees of Our Lady Help of Christians and the Association of Salesian Cooperators. He is the patron saint of young people and the “father and teacher of youth” for his love and dedication to young people. He is also the patron saint of illusionists. He was born in Becchi, in northern Italy, on August 16th, 1815 and died in Turin on January 31st, 1888. Through his influence, oratories, boarding schools and vocational schools were created in several countries in Europe and America, as he sent missionaries to Latin America. He also published a variety of Catholic and “civil” literature. He built several churches, including the Basilica of Our Lady Help of Christians in Turin and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Rome, all of which were built solely with donations. He was beatified in 1929 and canonized in 1934.
