Luke was born in the city Antioch in Syria, a part of modern-day Turkey. He did not personally know Jesus but was a disciple of St. Paul. St. Luke wrote the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles. It was the Evangelist who most wrote about the mysteries connected with the Blessed Virgin Mary: the Annunciation of Archangel Gabriel, the Visitation to cousin St. Elizabeth, the Birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. St. Luke is represented with a bull because he begins the Gospel by talking about Zechariah’s sacrifice in the temple where the oxen were killed, in Jewish rituals. St. Luke is the patron saint of doctors, painters and artists. His feast day is October 18th.
